Amanda stays connected to her team with JobAccess support
For Amanda, nursing is about more than clinical care. It’s about communication, teamwork, and being there for patients when it matters most.
As a registered nurse and senior staff member at St Vincent’s Private Hospital, no two days are the same.
“My job varies from day to day, sometimes hour to hour,” Amanda said. “I go wherever the team needs me the most, and I'm always busy.”
Over time, communication at work became more challenging.
“As a hard of hearing nurse, there are always challenges,” she said. “But I found increasing difficulties with using phones and communicating with other staff.”
This began to affect her confidence.
“I started to doubt my ability to hear correctly on the phone and in meetings,” she said. “At times it was very stressful, to the point that I was thinking I had to give up my nursing career.”
After hearing about JobAccess through a friend, Amanda explored what support might be available.
Through the Employment Assistance Fund (EAF), JobAccess provided assistive technology to improve communication, helping with phone calls and enabling better participation in meetings.
“JobAccess was great,” Amanda said. “They helped with IT and connectivity to my computer and phone system, which I can now use to make patient phone calls with clarity and ease.”
“They also provided a device I can use in meetings, which has been fantastic.”
With the right adjustments in place, Amanda has been able to stay connected to her work, her patients, and her team.
“These adjustments have not just helped me do my job; they have allowed me to do my job,” she said.
“Now I can go to meetings and not only hear but also contribute.”
The change has had a lasting impact on how Amanda feels at work.
“The impact has been tremendous,” she said. “I feel confident in my job again and feel like I am part of the team.”
For Amanda, that sense of connection is what makes continuing in her role possible.
She encourages employers and staff to consider what support may be available.
“It empowers people with disability to continue to work and feel like they belong to a team,” she said.
