Our job seekers

At NOVA our jobseekers receive one-on-one attention. We appreciate that not everyone needs the same service, so we tailor our service to meet each job seeker’s needs. We make sure our jobseekers have a smooth transition into work, whether from school, transition program, study, parenthood, rehabilitation program, support service or long-term unemployment.

Our jobseekers are actively involved in setting goals, planning training and job seeking. We run workshops to strengthen each client’s set of skills. Here are two examples.

After completing NOVA’s Transition program, Jasmin was ready to start work. She’d never worked before so needed assistance with life skills. Her NOVA support worker helped her prepare for and travel to work, and created a daily time schedule to follow. Each task is broken down into small steps. On the job, Jasmin required training and support to learn her role (using the cash register, storing stock and communicating with her employer). For the first three months she needed 80-100% onsite support. Because she learnt her tasks quickly, Jasmin now needs only weekly onsite support.

Chris’s employment history was in hospitality, but, due to the pressure of this industry, it was not a suitable job choice. He needed an outdoor job that required no reading or writing and with lots of tasks to do. His Employment Consultant found him work at a panel-beating workshop. Within a week he’d done so well his hours were increased from 15 to 25 with the possibility of 38. Chris and his employer are extremely happy.

Our employers

All types of industries hire people from NOVA Employment. We support businesses through the entire employment process from pre-screening to ongoing onsite support.

Hiring through us makes business sense because NOVA saves you time and money. We handle the seven-step process of advertising, shortlisting, interviewing, sign up, induction, job training and coaching. We get to know your business to ensure we benefit you, finding and coaching the right staff for your role, first time.

We look for employers who are open to having a diverse, multi-skilled workforce. These companies can be large, medium or small. Each of our jobseekers has something great to offer our employers. Many employers return to NOVA  to recruit staff

Most of the positions we fill are in St Marys, Penrith, Mt Druitt, Blacktown and surrounding suburbs, but we also service areas as far as Parramatta and Wetherill Park. Wherever you are, contact us to meet your staffing needs.

“NOVA has assisted the club with the employment of several workers. Prior to our contact with NOVA, our experience with staff with a disability was limited. NOVA has built a positive relationship with the club and has provided support to ensure our new employees are able to carry out the tasks and responsibilities required.” Julie, HR manager

“We had a requirement for a staff member to assist with our archiving, filing and general office work. NOVA Employment has been an excellent resource and constant source of support.” Jo, manager

Our networks

NOVA forms strategic partnerships with local community and support services, schools and other educational providers to assist with referrals and building up the skills and support networks for our jobseekers. We regularly attend events put on by our local community.

We work really well with young people with significant disabilities. Many employers in the local area are keen to work with our youth program Transition.

All of our networking efforts lead to one outcome: to find and maintain meaningful, award-wage work for people with a disability because, as one of our Employment Consultants said recently, “Getting paid employment in a job of your choice is a life-changing experience. Knowing that I’m making a difference to someone’s life is the best part of my job.”

Our performance

At NOVA, we’re really proud of the statistics that back up the praise we receive from our job seekers, employers and local connections.

While the majority of our caseload are youth (40% are under the age of 25), we enjoy working with job seekers of all ages and backgrounds. Thirty-six per cent of our jobseekers have a mild or moderate intellectual disability.

Fifty per cent of our Eligible School Leavers (youth with a significant disability) are in employment. Compared to the national average, 8.3% more of NOVA’s jobseekers attend apprenticeships and traineeships where they can learn and earn. Fully 50% of our ATSI (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) participants found employment through us. We’re go that extra mile to secure solid employment for our jobseekers.

These quotes come from a satisfied job seeker and a satisfied parent.

“This is probably the best job I could ever ask for. I worked my butt off and I got what I wanted. I've gotta admit my attitude has changed. It's gonna take time to develop new skills but in time it will come.” James

“NOVA has helped me to get ready for work. Thanks to them I now have interview clothes, a great resume and portfolio, and have finally decided what I’d like to do.” Ashleigh, job seeker

“The support my son has received has given him the means to participate, just like everyone else. It sounds so simple, but it’s undoubtedly what we all aim for and deserve in life. NOVA’s support has increased Scott’s confidence. He just needed to be given a chance.” Scott’s mum

Of all the jobs we find for our jobseekers, 47% are full-time. This is because we know that meaningful, award-wage employment changes people’s lives for the better.

About us

Staff at NOVA are passionate, committed and experienced. Our team all know what we’re here for – to find meaningful, award-wage jobs for people with a disability and supporting them to stay in work.

At NOVA we love to think outside the square. We engage each client and assist them to map their own pathway to employment. We give our jobseekers unique opportunities that improve community awareness of their skills and abilities.

Our staff know the local area really well – that’s employers, schools, support services, and the rest of the community. Employers come back to us seeking NOVA jobseekers to fill a position before advertising the position to the rest of the community. They trust us because in the past we’ve provided them with skilled, enthusiastic, reliable staff and on-going support to both our jobseekers and the employer. Please see our Employer section for more details.

NOVA staff have a wealth of experience across all areas related to disability employment, including disability support, vocational training, sales, marketing, business, health, education and customer service.  Many of our staff have personal experience of disability and/or of living with a relative with a disability.

We feel we’re making the biggest difference when we place a client into meaningful work. Please see our Performance section for our strong statistics and quotes from our staff.
