Support for Deaf workers during induction

If you are Deaf, you may benefit from support during induction so you get the most benefit from the introductory information and training for your new job.  An Auslan (Australian Sign Language) interpreter may assist during your induction and training.  Your employer and co-workers may also benefit from Deaf awareness training.

Free Auslan services

Your employer may be eligible for financial assistance through the Employment Assistance Fund to help with the cost of Auslan interpreting services. Your employer may also be eligible to have staff members who work with a Deaf employee trained in Auslan and undertake Deaf awareness training.

There are a range of work related modifications, equipment and services available through the Employment Assistance Fund to assist eligible employees with disability.

If you would like more information about the Employment Assistance Fund please see the following:

Your employment service provider

An Australian Government employment service provider may assist during induction and training by helping you with communication. They help you understand the job requirements and help with any adjustments. They may be able to organise Auslan interpreting for your induction.

Some employment services providers are specialists in assisting people who are Deaf or have hearing loss.

The Australian Federation of Deaf Societies provides a list of members, many of whom offer employment services.  See our Related Links for more information.
