The New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) is an Australian Government initiative that helps eligible unemployed people start and run their own small business.
For people with disability, starting a business may offer the flexibility needed to start work or return to work. Establishing a business under the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme can also be an interesting alternative path to employment for people with disability.
Research has shown New Enterprise Incentive Scheme participants with disability have very good chances of success with 78.2 per cent still employed after completing the scheme (Department of Employment and Workplace Relations 2007).
For the first year of the business, the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme is there to train, support and help participants become self-supporting and independent. New Enterprise Incentive Scheme participants also undertake an accredited three-month small business management course. In the first year, business advice and mentor support is provided to help the business become successful.
The Scheme provides this support through a network of private, community and government organisations. These providers are local organisations such as Business Enterprise Centres, TAFE Small Business Centres, community organisations and private sector organisations contracted by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations to deliver the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme throughout Australia.
All New Enterprise Incentive Scheme providers have accessible training facilities and premises.
Workplace adjustments and modifications
In addition to the training and mentoring received while participating in the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme, participants may also be eligible for assistance through the Employment Assistance Fund. The Employment Assistance Fund is available to eligible self-employed workers and helps pay for the costs involved in modifying your workplace or purchasing special or adaptive equipment.
