International Day of People with Disability

A new web site has been launched to provide a dedicated information resource for International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).

The web site provides background information and support resources for planning IDPwD events, as well as frequently asked questions and useful links for people looking for more disability information.

There is also an online registration function for event organisers, and a State by State Event Calendar so people wishing to participate in an IDPwD event can find out what’s on in their local area.

A free promotional pack is available to event organisers who register their event/s. The pack includes balloons, stickers, button badges, wristbands and posters, to help promote your event and celebrate on the day.

With one in five Australians reported as having a disability (Australian Bureau of Statistics), IDPwD is an important day that warrants the attention and support of us all. You can help promote IDPwD and raise awareness of disability issues within your community by checking out the IDPwD web site today and planning an event!

What is the International Day of People with Disability?

IDPwD is a United Nations sanctioned day held on 3 December each year. It aims to promote the rights and well being of people with disability by facilitating awareness and understanding of disability issues. The day was established in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly, at the conclusion of the United Nations Decade of Disabled Persons (1983-1992). Since 1996, the Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaCSIA) has administered an allocation of funds to promote and raise awareness of IDPwD within Australia. 2006 marks the 25th anniversary of this day.
