What is web accessibility?
The Internet’s capacity to facilitate communication should be available to everyone. Web accessibility means:
-
removing obstacles that might prevent people with disability from accessing information online
-
enabling web sites to function with assistive and innovative technologies
-
ensuring that web sites can be accessed on lower speed Internet connections or with older technologies.
Our aim
Our aim is that this web site will achieve best practice in accessible web design. JobAccess has been formally assessed by Vision Australia’s Online Accessibility Consulting against the international standards established by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The results of the assessment will inform progressive improvement of the site.
Your feedback
We are constantly trying to improve the usability and accessibility of the JobAccess web site and invite your feedback and comments.
Accessibility features of this site
The following features enable all users to benefit from JobAccess:
Navigation
Site layout
JobAccess has a consistent layout throughout so that you can reliably predict where things will be.
External links
We will alert you when a hyperlink will take you away from the JobAccess web site. The Related Links box will only ever contain links that take you off the JobAccess web site. Related links will always open in a new browser window.
Navigating without a mouse
You can navigate the JobAccess web site using the tab key on your keyboard. When you want to select a link, use the enter key.
If you use a screen reader or the tab key to navigate the website you can skip over repetitive navigation links straight into the main content of a page. To reveal the skip to content option, press the tab key when you arrive on any page until the option is revealed. Hit the enter key when skip to content is presented.
When you arrive on a JobAccess page you can choose to move directly into the navigation pane rather than read content. To reveal the skip to navigation option, press the tab key when you arrive on any page of the JobAccess web site until the option is revealed. Hit the enter key when the skip to navigation option is presented.
Viewing the site
Changing the size of the text—all browsers
You can change the size of the text to suit your needs:
-
select view from your browser’s navigation bar (the bar at the top of the screen when you have the web site open)
-
select text size from the drop down list
-
select larger or the text size that best suits your individual needs.
Options for different browsers
The browser that you use will normally have its own accessibility options or free downloads to increase your accessibility options. Use our Related Links to view the official accessibility information for Netscape, Internet Explorer and Mozilla.
Printing and file formats
Each page of the JobAccess web site is printer friendly. Sometimes we will provide links to brochures or fact sheets that you can print out or read on the screen. These documents will always be provided in two formats:
PDF—Portable Document Format
PDF documents look like they have been scanned or photographed. They require the use of Acrobat Reader to open and may not be compatible with some forms of assistive technology, particular older products. To access a free download of Acrobat Reader click on the following link (please note that this link will take you to an external web site in a new window):
RTF—Rich Text Format
RTF is a common file format used to transfer files between different word processing programs. It preserves most of the formatting of the document. To access a free download of Microsoft Word Viewer click on the following link (please note that this link will take you to an external web site in a new window):
Multi media clips
To play our multi media clips, you will need Windows Media Player. If you don't have Windows Media Player, you can download a free version from the Windows Download Centre—see our Related Links. Downloading the software can take a while on slow Internet connections. To make the files accessible to as many people as possible, each media file is captioned and the transcript for each file is available on the same page as the media file itself.
The JobAccess secure site
The JobAccess Advisers can enter an online application on your behalf if you should experience any difficulties accessing the secure JobAccess site.
Alternative formats
You can request the information contained on the JobAccess web site in an alternative format if you are unable to access it through the site. To request an alternative format, please contact the JobAccess Advisers.
