Evacuation and emergency

Procedures for fire and other emergencies should always include provisions for the evacuation of people with disability. As an employer, it is your responsibility to make sure all employees are aware of the evacuation and emergency procedures in the workplace.

This checklist will help you with reviewing and developing your evacuation and emergency procedures to include all employees. For information on your rights and responsibilities regarding occupational health and safety, including evacuation and emergency procedures, visit:

Occupational health and safety

Question 1: Have you read through the information available on our web site regarding your rights and responsibilities with occupational health and safety, including evacuation and emergency procedures?

Question 2: Have you reviewed and developed your evacuation and emergency procedures to consider the needs of all employees?

Question 3: Have you discussed the evacuation and emergency procedures with your employees as they will be the experts in any assistance, equipment or adjustments that they may require?

Question 4: Has a Fire Warden been assigned to each work area, such as each floor in an office building, or a section of a warehouse or factory?

Question 5: Is the Fire Warden aware of all employees with disability located in their area?

Question 6: Has a refuge area for employees with reduced mobility been identified, such as a fire isolated stairwell?

Question 7: Are all employees familiar with the evacuation and emergency procedures?

Question 8: Are evacuation drills conducted regularly, including practice for evacuating people with disability?

Question 9: Are smoke detectors and fire extinguishers installed and regularly tested?

Question 10: Are flashing light fire alarms installed?

Question 11: Are Tactile Ground Surface Indicators (TGSIs) installed in stairwells?

Question 12: Has each employee with a mobility impairment been assigned a ‘buddy’?

Question 13: Are all emergency exits clear and unobstructed?

Question 14: Are the evacuation and emergency procedures clearly displayed?

Question 15: Are the evacuation and emergency procedures available in appropriate formats to meet the needs of all employees?
