- identification of different folders
- identification of different items such as hazardous chemicals
- in filing systems to make it easier to search for documents
- highlight specific areas within a document.

Colour coding can be helpful for people with learning disabilities as it can provide easy access to information, make information finding a simpler task and can help improve organisational skills.
