Cleaning products—alternative

Some people may require alternative cleaning products due to physical impairments, sensitivity to chemicals or to avoid triggering symptoms of a specific existing condition such as asthma, eczema or psoriasis.

Workplace solutions and adjustments:

There are a variety of alternative cleaning products that can assist people with a physical impairment including:

  • long handled tools
  • enlarged grip tools
  • slip resistant grip tools
  • lightweight cleaning equipment
  • buckets or cleaning trolleys with easy tracking, large wheels
  • self propelled, upright or backpack style vacuum cleaners.

For people who have difficulty using traditional cleaning chemicals due to specific sensitivities, there are various steps that can be taken to minimise the risk of a reaction:

  • open windows and doors when cleaning
  • use liquid or solid products and avoid spray products
  • wear a mask
  • wear gloves (try gloves made of varying materials or wear cotton liner gloves)
  • use fragrance free, non-toxic cleaning alternatives such as vinegar and baking soda.
