Air purification systems

Indoor air cleaning systems such as air purification systems, remove allergens and pollutants from indoor air to create a cleaner, healthier work and home environment.

Air purification systems can be used within an entire building or in individual cubicles or work spaces, however it is important to determine the most appropriate air purification system by identifying the type of air contaminant/s to be removed and the area in which it is to operate. There are a range of air purifying systems available which either address one type or multiple airborne contaminants and may include:

  • hepa filter systems which aim to remove very small particles such as dust, pollens, mold spores and dust mites
  • air ionizing systems which create negative ions causing very fine airborne particles to join together and due to their combined increased weight, drop to the ground thereby reducing particles breathed in
  • ultraviolet lamps can help stop the spread of illness and disease by destroying harmful micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses, mould and other fungi, if or as they are exposed to the ultraviolet light
  • activated carbon air filters through their design absorb smells such as cigarette smoke, gases, chemical fumes and other strong smells
  • ozone generators aim to destroy certain bacteria especially odour causing bacteria which create strong smells, along with strong chemical odors
  • purifying hydroxyl radical systems which combine hydroxyl radical technology with ultraviolet light and air ionizing systems to remove multiple contaminants.

Other factors to consider when purchasing an air purification system include the cost of replacement filters or parts and running costs to operate (Indoor Purification Systems, Inc. 1999 – 2004; Allergyescape.com (no date specified)).

Workplace solutions and adjustments:

As greater amounts of people work indoors in environments restricting the flow of fresh air, ventilation can be restricted impacting on the contribution of air contaminants in the air. Air purification systems can assist in removing specific types of airborne contaminants within the workplace which may assist people with respiratory sensitivities.

Other issues to consider in order to improve the condition of the air in the workplace include:

  • allowing regular breaks
  • ensuring windows and doors are open for ventilation where possible
  • ensuring air conditioning and ventilation systems are well maintained
  • tasks resulting in vapours or dust be isolated from other areas of the workplace to minimise employee exposure.
