Wrist braces

Wrist braces are used to help support and stabilise the wrist whilst also providing pain relief and/or reductions in swelling. Wrist braces can be pre-fabricated or custom made to suit the individual (Sportstek 2008; Independent Living Centres Australia Inc. 2007).

Wrist braces may be suitable for people who experience:

  • carpel tunnel syndrome (pressure on the main wrist nerve causing pain, numbness and/or tingling)
  • wrist strains and sprains
  • swelling
  • localised wrist pain
  • arthritis
  • tendonitis (inflammation of tendons).

Wrist braces when worn correctly and appropriately can provide:

  • compression around the wrist joint to increase stability
  • support during wrist flexion/extension and stretching
  • improved muscle co-ordination
  • assistance to maintain a neutral wrist position
  • smooth, controlled resistance for range of movement.

Professional advice should be sought prior to the buying or wearing of a brace or support. This will ensure that a suitably designed support is recommended, appropriate instructions given for use and alternative treatments considered such as strengthening exercises.

Workplace solutions and adjustments:

For people experiencing wrist pain or fatigue when keying, mousing or writing whilst working at a desk, it may be beneficial for the individual to be provided with a wrist brace for support and to help maintain a neutral wrist position. It is also good practice to consider the workstation environment to determine whether this may be contributing to the individual’s symptoms. Other recommendations that may assist with reducing symptoms include:

  • alternating activities to prevent occupational overuse
  • maintaining a neutral wrist position during keyboard and mouse use
  • using stretches and exercises on regular basis throughout the working day.
