Standard cash registers can be fitted with a device that reads the visual display aloud. The device can be programmed to meet the person’s needs and can read out the numbers as they are inputted as well as the sum total. The speech adaptor is fitted to a cash register and works with both LCD and LED displays (Micro Marvellous 2007).
Workplace solutions and adjustments:
For people with a visual impairment working in a sales or customer service role, a “talking” cash register can provide more independence in their work role as they are able to hear the required information. A “talking” cash register can also provide a verbal reinforcement for people with visual processing difficulties.
