Signage—talking signs and verbal landmark systems

Talking signs or verbal landmark systems provide voice identification for permanent landmarks. It operates via an infrared wireless program to provide orientation for people who are blind or visually impaired. It can also benefit people who have difficulties reading print material.

Transmitters for talking signs can be installed within buildings or in the greater environment. They send out signals which are then received by a hand-held remote that converts the signals into short and straightforward verbal messages, such as “stairway” or “restroom” (Talking Signs 2008; Walkinginfo.org (no date specified)).
