Attention and memory

The ability to selectively focus our thinking or attention on one particular task or work skill in order to learn and subsequently remember how to perform the task is an important requirement in most workplaces across all industries. We can all be unfocussed or forgetful from time to time, especially when we are tired, preoccupied or distracted. However, for individuals with some form of cognitive impairment (including an intellectual disability, acquired brain injury, a specific learning disability, a psychiatric disorder, dementia or neurological condition), these abilities can be severely compromised, potentially leading to stress, social withdrawal and poor work performance.

Workplace solutions and adjustments

A cognition and communication specialist, such as a speech pathologist may be useful in identifying any difficulties in this area by way of assessment. There are also a range of strategies, aids and products which can assist and support people who may experience particular difficulties in the workplace.
