iTouch Australia, a leading provider of mobile telecommunications entertainment services, is an employer of people with disability that has experienced the attractive benefits people with disability can add to an organisation. Holly, a job seeker on a Disability Support Pension, was referred to atWork Australia, for job search assistance. A former Telethon child, Holly is a wheelchair user. atWork Australia was able to assist Holly in attaining a permanent ongoing position with iTouch. atWork Australia contacted JobAccess, initiating the advice and assessment process that resulted in the approval of funding for various modifications and equipment, including the installation of rails in the bathroom, wider door access and a telephone headset. These were made available from the Commonwealth Government Workplace Modifications Scheme.
Holly, previously a volunteer, has now been working with iTouch for two years. She has been able to increase her skills and become more assertive and confident.
“They’re the best employer I’ve ever had,” said Holly.
iTouch employ four people with disability, including paralysis and visual impairment, out of a staff of 26 in their call centre. They have welcomed people with disability in their recruitment strategy due to the excellent work ethic they have encountered in their staff members with disability. Success stories like Holly’s have identified a number of benefits available by employing people with disability, including lower workers’ compensation costs, lower absenteeism, lower recruitment costs and higher staff morale and loyalty. Michael Monaghan, Holly’s manager at iTouch, reflects this attitude.
“Some employees are here today, gone tomorrow,” he said. “Our staff with disability are committed, long-term employees.”
In a tight labour market, employing people with disability is an opportunity employers cannot afford to ignore. People with disability can bring a diverse range of skills, talent, ability and qualifications to the workplace.
“There are four good reasons why you should make your business accessible. It is good for the bottom line, its good for your company, it’s good for customers and it’s good for the community.”
