Mobility aids provide stability for those who are able to mobilise but require some assistance or provide alternative ways to mobilise for those who are unable to walk independently.
Workplace solutions and adjustments
Mobility aids are used for a variety of different reasons, for example for individuals who:
- are recovering from injury and unable to weight bear
- have reduced balance
- have reduced strength or endurance due to illness or injury
- are unable to walk due to illness or injury.
The provision of a walking aid can help to enhance stability by providing an extra point of contact with the ground, therefore widening the base of support. Walking aids can also reduce some of the weight bearing through the lower limbs by dispersing it through the upper limbs and the walking aid.
There are various mobility aids that can assist a person with disability in the workplace. The individual needs of the person and the workplace environment will need to be assessed to determine which type of mobility aid is the most appropriate. It is recommended that advice be sought from a health professional prior to purchasing any type of mobility aid:
