Graphic tablets

A graphics tablet is a device that can be connected to the computer to allow the user to hand draw images or graphics. It is used as an alternative or in conjunction with a mouse or other pointing device. The graphics tablet consists of:

  • A flat bed surface  which comes in different sizes and is a flat surface on which a person can draw
  • a specialised pen which is used to draw.

A graphics tablet allows the user to personalise documents, photos and emails by adding a hand drawn image or graphic.

There are also talking tactile tablets that can be used with audio files, to allow individuals with vision impairment to understand graphic information.

Workplace solutions and adjustments

For people with disability which affects their vision or upper limb function a graphics tablet can be used in the workplace to increase productivity and allow for independence. Some factors which may need to be considered when choosing an appropriate tablet are:

  • the size of the tablet as larger sizes require more arm movement
  • the interface, as in how the graphics tablet is connected to the computer
  • the pen which is used to draw will need to be comfortable, noting that battery operated pens are heavier.
