Optical wear—computer glasses

Computer glasses are specifically designed to reduce eye strain for people who are required to look at computers for long periods during their working day.

Workplace solutions and adjustments

Eye strain can result from looking at a computer screen for long periods. Symptoms of eye strain can include sore eyes, blurred vision, headache and tired eyes.  Specialised computer glasses have lenses which are tinted to reduce the glare from the computer screen whilst gently repositioning the eyes to a more natural, comfortable position, thus relieving the demand on the eye muscles. This leads to a reduction in tension and enhances clearer vision.

For people working at a computer for extensive periods of time within the workplace that are experiencing eye strain symptoms, specialised computer glasses may be of some assistance. Consideration can also be given to resting the eyes from computer use by:

  • taking regular breaks
  • checking that there is adequate lighting in the workplace
  • reducing glare on the computer screen
  • checking the monitor is in an appropriate position, for example positioning the monitor directly in line of sight, 5-15 degrees below line of sight, and at least 60cm from eyes
  • blinking regularly to re-hydrate the eyes
  • using ocular lubricants as recommended by some optometrists
  • encouraging regular eye tests
  • encouraging use of appropriate prescription glasses where required.
