The musculo-skeletal system consists of the muscles, bones, joint and related structures, such as tendons and connective tissue, which function in the movement of the parts and organs of the body (Glanze 1990).
Symptoms and characteristics
Disorders that affect the musculo-skeletal system cause pain or discomfort in the bones, joints, muscles, or surrounding structures. They can affect all age groups potentially causing disability and impairment, however the prevalence usually increases with age. These disorders can be temporary or permanent, widespread or localised to a certain part of the body.
Musculo-skeletal disorders can have an affect on mobility and loss of capacity to work at full productivity (Better Health Channel 2007).
